SIP-VoIP FAQ
FAQ - last updated: 21.03.2008 - Updated posts are red.
0. Will I need WiFi connenction for the calls to work? Yes. The VoIP SW requires WiFi connection to transmit your phone call.1. When calling someone on the ipod touch where do I get a SIP provider from and does it cost any money? You will need to register a SIP account. The one we are using for testing is www.freecall.com. Some countries are for free, some are not at this provider. Every provider has different options. You will need to choose a provider that offers the most for you.2. How do I get a Microphone? … For ordering a mic, you just need to find the link on the right side, or to use this link. Yes: Our Microphones have been tested on OS 1.1.1 112, 113 and and 1.1.4. Pls check also point 29.3. Is this mic meant only for Voice recording? Can it be used for VoIP technology too? The mic is a physical device and it can be used with ANY app that supports LineIn from the Touch. It is a dictaphone SW (example: VNotes) that stores your voice samples from the Touchmods Mic to the Flash Memory of the Touch. Also, it is the VoIP SW that will make your Touch call your friends and families and send your voice acquired by the mic to the other side.4. Do I have to change something on the iPod Touch to make the VoIP work? First, you will need to allow homebrew and 3rd party SW for your iPod. You do it by opening and following the page at www.jalibreakme.com in your Safari on the Touch. (if it does not work, try the tutorials on iclarified.com). Then you will need to add the Touchmods repository (see point 8below) into the application called Installer, and then to install the VoIP SIP app.5. How do I register a SIP account? For available providers pls check the table on the right side of our blog. Example: in case of www.freecall.com, download the Win application, and register a SIP account. If you have a Linux or Mac machine, pls search for the link that allows creating an account without the need to download the App. 6. Purchasing SIP credits Depends on the provider you use. In case of freecall.com you go online, log in, and use one of the many ways to upload money. The next min you can make a call..7. Getting a call-in number? it is not really necessary but if you insist … you just choose this additional option when buying credits for minutes next time
For setting problems pls check out nr.38-40.8. Installing and Starting the SIP VoIP app on the Touch? a) In case you an older release of SIP-VoIP from Touchmods, the only thing you need is to UPDATE it after the new release. b )If you have nothing installed yet, you will need to add our repository to the Sources list in Installer:http://touchmods.net/rep.xml.. and Install the Touchmods SIP VoIP Application. Once springboard restarted, you search for and clink the green Touchmods logo with the white headset.c) If you have a problem isntalling the app through the installer (some people reported that the app just does not want to “update”)…. First, please try again, completely uninstall our app and remove rep.xml. Reload the sources, then add our source again. Maybe restart the machine inbetween? d) if everything above fails: pls try adding the app manually by hand with scp. (secure-copy). The url to download the app.zip is: http://touchmods.net/releases/SIP-VoIP.app.zipYou will need to restart Springboard by invoking restart over ssh: (find * | grep restart, then cd there and ./restart). The restart routine is from Erica’s utilities, we guess.NOTE: there is also the possibility that your ipod has a small problem which prevents it from proper installation. Maybe after a restore and rejailbreak it works better. (We used jailbreakme.com)9. Entering the account details You will need your login name, password, and the registrar, which is “sip.voiparound.com” in case of using freecall.com. For the registrar of other providers pls check this table here:http://svsip.free.fr/spip.php?article2registrar for gizmoproject: proxy01.sipphone.com10. The SAVE button is hidden 50% below the keyboard .. is it beacause of it is beta
You can get rid of the keyboard by pressing “return”, then you will see the whole SAVE button.11. The volume is too low, how do i change the volume? If you do it before invoking the SIP VoIP App: you open the mp3 player and raise the volumeto max. If you need it once the SIP VoIP App is already running: double-click the physical HOME button, and move the volume, then press CLOSE.12: Why only the Left speaker is active on the Touch during the phone calls? The VoiP communication is only mono, and our first version uses only the left channel.13. My mic does not work, neither with sip, neither with recfile. The wave i record is an empty file. We only can guarantee that the mic -as a device itself- is working when sending it to you. We cannot guarantee that the iPod works with a given SW at your side. But EVERY mic is tested before leaving us.14. What are the “confirmed working providers” ?The list of Approved providers is on the right side of our blog. We are offering the option to put adverts for their services on our site.15. Can we receive call on the Touch? Not with the recent version of the Touchmods App. We plan to add a lot of features and design tricks, but it is for the future.16. Does your SW work with voip buster ?The list of Approved providers is on the right side of our blog. We are offering the option to put adverts for their services on our site.17. I am trying to get a provider ready for Japan. Please let me know if you think this will work.http://www.raketu.com/en/iphone.phpThis provider will not work as requires that you have 2 numbers. 1 to call “from” and 1 to call. 18. Are the phone calls really free? Pls go to the right side and check the list of supported SIP VoIP providers. Feel free to check their websites and learn if they offer free calls to your country. We provide the SW, they provide the service. Our tool is free, that’s what we know.19. The walmart mic mod is NOT going so well for me! How do I get one of your Microphones? Pls go here: http://home.swipnet.se/ridax/touchmic.htm and preorder a Mic: As we have now another batch of microphones to send out, your Touchmods Mic will be shipped in some days.20. Do you think the iPod Touch voip will work with my XYZ server from another provider?XYZ will work if it uses SIP protocol but not in case of IAX protocol.21. I have read on french SIP that u can add RAS key (certificats) to catch freephonie (in france) in public room even encrypted using this system (wpa?). Nokia is providing support of RSA key. Will you implement this?Once the Touchmods SIP VoIP app works on iphone we will try to use certificates. First we need to get soome iPhones for testing and development.22. Is ther any site describing this hack in other languages? There are several “Fun- sites” out there we are aware of:ipodtouchmic.com .. from RxE (still pointing to our old blog),touchmods.fr .. from Antoine,http://rob.tc/ .. from Rob,ipodtouch4all.com .. from Stuartthe latest one does have an embedded translator, so you can check out the news in Japanese if you like
23. How can I change the Icon and the background skin of the SIP VoIP application? Just ssh into your Touch and go into the application directory/Applications/SIP-VoIP.appHere you can replace icon.png, Default.png, call.png and account.png from the ones you download from our skin repository:http://touchmods.net/skins/Do not forget to rename them so that the new ones exactly match the name of theorig ones!24. It would be nice to have a Mobile Phone wich can share HSDPA, Edge, or GPRS data over its WiFi. Which Phone would you recommend? NO ANSWER YET25. I write all setting then type the number then click on dial then it freeze?Sometimes we also have a feeling that it freezes, but no. You need to wait once in a while 1-2 mins for the connection to be established, it is 1.Jan .. so it is understandable. There can be also a typo in your account details. Pls check everything carefullyOk: here is (maybe) a new reason: the password in our app does not recognize uppercase characters….for example “mypassWORD”. So pls use lower-case passwords: (example: change “mypassWORD” to lowercase by using your big machine: “mypassword”).26. Is it possible to remove my name from the list of Microphone Preorders? Yes, it is, but you are making an extra job for us. 10 guys register and 2 of then unregister… The registration is automatized, but the unregistration is not. Pls think twice before asking for a mic. We will pay for the preorder and do a lot of organizational stuff so that you have your own mic.27. The battery does not last long after I made a call. There could be two cases: HW: the Walmart mic seems to drain the battery even the iPod is in sleep mode. It has too many extra ICs to check if the Mic is an approved device, and they maybe never sleep.. SW: In case of SIP-VoIP from 1.1.2008, after finishing the call you need to exit the SIP app and not to let it running. The mediaserver process seems to run in the background, which we tried to fix, but still: just try to type top in the Terminal or over SSH during a call is made and you will see the situation. Mediaserver should NOT use the CPU if no call is active. The Touchmods mic is definitely NOT the battery killer.28. Is there any chance to use the Belkin Tunetalk? It has microphone and speakers so that one would not need to use the earplugs. We would need one to look at, it definitely would need some hack, but let’s see. The idea of having both, speaker and mic in one is good, however, there is a risk of acoustic feedback, as we have a two-way communication with a feedback loop in case of VoIP.29. I did register for the 500 mics, everything went ok, but still did not receive the billing info.Thank you for registering for a Microphone! There was much higher interest for the Touchmods Mics as we expected, therefore the first shipment will be 1000 Mics instead of the planned 500! Hope this is a good news for the first 1000 people. If you are one of them, you received a mail on 13.1.2008 with the payment details, asking for payment. In case we do not receive your payment till 20.1.2008, the next guys starting at position 1001 will get the mic reserved for you. 30. I would really like to have one of those mics, but how can I be sure that I really receive it after I payed?Pls check the Comment nr. 10 from Ining here: http://touchmods.blog.com/2448253/His Mic is one of the very first ones, hand-made. If you still do NOT trust us, you can build your own Mic, based on our “do-it-yourself” tutorials - Part1 and Part2 - and donate a little. 31. Could you ship the Mic to Europe? And could you tell me the shipping costs? The Touchmods team members are located in Europe. We ship worldwide, and the shipping costs are included in the 30 Eu (45 USD). Wherever you are from.32. I love the SIP-VoIP app! I don’t love the fact that I can’t find a provider that will not charge or that limits me to a certain amount of minutes per week…I must ask, what service do you use? And how much does it cost? Any cons? Pros? Thanks! We use freecall.com and did upload Eu 20 during the last days to our the app.. It is free to most of the countries we need in Europe for 3 Months. We have no experience with other providers. All want money, that’s clear, nobody works for free.33. I went to your site but don’t see anything about buying or prepaying for the mic. Please give me a direct link and how much U.S currency I need to pay. Pls load touchmods.net into a NEW browser window (you open a new window by Ctrl-N on a most of the browsers). Then you search the Order a Mic link on the right side of the page…, choose the mic colour, click and send Eu 29.90 (USD 45). Thnx ahead!!34. Can you ship to another address, not to the one on my PayPal account? If your shipping address is not the same as the address used at the PayPal Account you payed with, pls send us an email to marian-at-totalcar-dot-hu.35. Where the hell can i find the ivoice III? I went to all walmarts and even online and they don’t have it. With iVoice related questions pls. contact Uphi: mic-at-uphi-dot-net36. Before i buy this mic, i was wondering what the best sip/voip provider is? i know freecall/voipbuster end up charging money (10 trial calls) i would want to know what the best FREE one is, to call the USA.NO ANSWER YET; as the developers are located in EU
37. Why is it erasing the number when I touch ”call” and it stays on hangup for ever. i don’t understand that even when I have internet. Even when i use freecall.com settings. Andy H. found this issue: If your iPod / iPhone for whatever reason cannot resolve the SIP-Server, …try to ping the sip-server from your computer before starting the app. Another way is to visit the sip-server url from Safari on iPod/iPhone which will also resolve the DNS for you. Explanation: It seems for some reason, that the iPod cannot resolve the SIP name to its respective IP address. Once the CNAME is “ping”-ed from a computer or from Safari (so that the router resolved and cached it), the iPod is able to resolve it, and connect to that. 38. I want to change the skins, but what does it mean to “ssh into my touch!, is it an app or what? ssh is a remote login into your Touch from the command-line of your PC. But you may use SecureFTP (a graphical-interface based app) for Win, or Cyberduck (similar for Mac machines) in order to reach the directory of your machine…Then you will need to go into that directory “/Applications/SIP-VoIP” and replace the skins. You will need the SSH server installed on the Touch, pls Install “Services” maybe it also requires something extra..you will need to search some forums.39. SIP Account settings do NOT save
The fix for the save problem on OS 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 is:1. Open a shell (ssh or local on the pod)2. type:”chown -R mobile /Applications/SIP-VoIP.app” Now the save works again… 40. How do I register for a call-in number, in other words inbound number? How does it work on my iPod Touch? Please check out the comments on the following link below. There is a nice description.. http://touchmods.wordpress.com/2008/03/14/mics-shipping-again/

January 10, 2008 at 4:10 am
Hi!
I would first like to say you have been doing very good job, and i could not even think i would be able to think about any solution to: “How to call on iPod Touch”.
I would like to know if there is any chances that doing all this will break or dommage the iPod Touch.
I would also like to know, if after doing all this, I will be able to call anywhere i can get Wi-Fi connection (sorry this may be already answered, has the other questions)
And finally, how much do you ask for a mic delivered to: Canada, Québec?
Thanks alot!
January 10, 2008 at 9:10 am
i try to make a call. sometimes it just freezes on me. i got it to work after a little while i put in 001 my area code and the number but the phone didnt ring… it even had the little end call icon. anyone know what’s wrong? i had no mic, i just wanted to see if it would call. and yeah i checked 25 above.

BYE!!!!!
January 10, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Thanks for listing our SIP service on your site. Please list the flatplanetphone.com address which is the web site and not the flatplanetphone.net address which is the SIP server.
We have had very positive feedback from Kenny who has tested the iPod with us. We also welcome other users to test us, send me an email to itouch @ flatplanetphone.com
January 11, 2008 at 1:07 am
Stratus makes softswitches, session controllers and the like for the VOIP industry. (like http://www.magicjack.com) We downloaded your phone for testing on an iTouch and noticed that you don’t allow setting the SIP registration timeout parameter (that we know of) This parameter will be essential eventually to allow NAT traversal to occur for inbound calls. As you know many NAT/firewalls - Linksys, Dlink etc. will only open a port/pinhole for inbound calls for a brief period (ie. 1 minute) before closing it again.
So…, is there a way to do this yet? If not, I suggest you set your default to 60 seconds which will work for most firewalls.
BTW:It would be nice if you set the Hangup indicator back to Dial once you receive the BYE and send the OK.
January 11, 2008 at 2:57 am
So wait………we have to make a donation and pay for the mic to get the mike?
January 11, 2008 at 2:10 pm

the mic is usd 45, eu 30 .. it is stated above pls read
@ jamie; will need hacking but might work
@ greg rtfm
@ berg . no idea!
@ gfh. it will.
January 11, 2008 at 4:42 pm

January 11, 2008 at 4:57 pm

January 11, 2008 at 5:53 pm
Will you continue with the project after the release of Apple’s iPhone/iPod Touch SDK or will you just start over again?? Will the mics work after that??
January 11, 2008 at 8:00 pm
[...] You can find more info about the pre-order on our FAQ page. [...]
January 11, 2008 at 8:32 pm
@ michael, we will add more parameters that users can change.. that should resolve the problem with the different settings of different providers.
January 11, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Oh no I tried to sign up for one of the mic
but everytime I enter
my email in it won’t keep the hyphen in it…
January 11, 2008 at 9:02 pm

January 12, 2008 at 1:54 am
Hahahaha okay sounds good!
I definately agree.
thanks
January 12, 2008 at 3:04 am
hey guy… I don’t really like the idea of paying for another service provider so I was wanting to know if its possible to use sip phone with my exsiting mobile provider
January 12, 2008 at 4:54 am
ok I have a question, I signed up for the 500 pre ordered mics awhile ago, but I need to pay through paypal and in order to do that i have to use my friends account which has a different email. So how will you know I was the one who donated and preordered it?
January 12, 2008 at 7:12 pm
@Trevor: bad news: yes, if you have a data-package from your mobile provider, but you will still need to sign for some SIP account. Then… you will need to share the DATA from your mobile to your Touch. Hope the question was not about using a mobile phone with SIP
@paternick: the mics will work, and the project stays as it is. Of course using another compiler .. is possible, but the code stays.
January 12, 2008 at 7:14 pm
@brown: pls send a mail with the BOTH email addresses listed inside to marian-at-totalcar-dot-hu with all the details inside. We will link the two email addresses together. Of yourse, we also need the real postal address in the mail
January 12, 2008 at 7:17 pm
@chino: the shipping costs are incl in the price, and we ship worldwide. yes, you need 3 thigs: iPod with the SIP-VOIP SW, Mic, and an ACTIVE SIP account.
January 12, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Hello,
I have a little question about this awesome mic
Can this mic also work on iPod Classic or iPod 5G?
Thanks!
January 12, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Made a donation and also prepaid for a mic but didnt leave my address in the form I know it is on the paypal info i sent but I want to make sure you can find me let me know if I need to send you my address
thanks and thanks for the great job with this mic and software
January 12, 2008 at 9:14 pm
okay I sent an email to Marian@totalcar.hu , was that right adress ? You kinda wrote the email adress like this Marian-at-totalcar-dot-hu , just making sure I used the right email, thanks again
January 12, 2008 at 9:19 pm
nevermind
January 12, 2008 at 9:20 pm
brown - it is common to write an email address like that (or post it as a jpeg) so that spambots will not find the address as they crawl through the various webpages on the net. I am going to guess that marian removes your post soon in order to keep that from happening. But that is the correct address.
January 12, 2008 at 11:34 pm
Hello!
Great work TouchMods!
Are you working on the internal mic from the iPhone?
Why is there “Mic may need hack” now? Four days ago there was “Not working”.
What’s that hack?
Thx!
January 13, 2008 at 1:29 am
hello
when will we able to use this software on an iPhone? Because if we have an Wi-Fi connection why should we call over our phone provider? We want use this voip solution, too.
January 13, 2008 at 9:12 am
I’m a little confused about the usefulness of the mic. Let’s say I want to use the IM+ Skype web app on my Touch to call other Skype users (not phone calls, just Skype to Skype calls). Will the mic work for that? And if so, will I still need to hack it, or just wait until Apple releases the SDK? The only reason I’d want a mic is for Skype support, and I don’t want to do any hacking right now.
January 13, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Hi, i pre paid yesterday morning but signed up for one of the 500 now 1000 about 1 week and a half ago, and i havent had a conformation email to say that i have one. So do you have any idea when i will?
many thanks Paul.
January 13, 2008 at 5:01 pm
What does ‘Mic may need hack’ means for iPhone’s? Is there a way to get it working? Is there any instruction?
Thanks a lot for the good work!
January 13, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Has anyone tired to get the app working with Skype?
January 14, 2008 at 5:02 am
does the walmart mic work without doing the mod?
January 14, 2008 at 10:43 am
Hi, I just bought your mic through the Donation button, but did not pre-order. I was wondering if you received my payment, thanks!
January 14, 2008 at 1:46 pm
@ryan - unmodified, the Wal-Mart mic will take line in from an amplified source (such as computer or other electronic device) through the line-in port, but it will not work for phone use unless modified. The modification takes voltage from one spot and injects it to the microphone (basically turning it on).
January 14, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Paypal does not seem to be working today. When I click on the button it says client is unable to recieve money.
January 14, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Hi guys. Can anyone tell me where the SIP VoiP is install or where the /Applications/ directory is actually located? I cannot seem to find it! What is the full path for the /Applications/ directory? Many thanks.
January 14, 2008 at 4:25 pm
@Paul: it seems you have a buggy browser. Pls install mozilla or other open source technology that is also capable to display the FAQ (frequently asked questions) above. We collected it for you and it should not happen that you miss it because of a shitty browser

Hi techmod,
Thanks for your response, it’s much appreciated! I think i wasnt full in my question and didn’t explain very well. Basically, I want to locate the /Applications/ directory on the iPod. I SSH’d into the iPod using CuteFTP Professional, but I cannot seem to see the Applications directory anywhere, or be able to see where the SIP VoiP is installed. What is the full /Applications/ location path for it do you know? Or do i have to create a /Applications/ directory? Many thanks in advance. Apologises for the tedious question! lol.

Hi guys!
There seem to be an awful lot of us iPhone users out here waiting for the chance to use your SIP-VoIP solution on our phones. There was a thread about it on the main page but it disappeared a few days ago.
Is there any chance of getting an update on the status of SIP-VoIP on the iPhone? The software seems to work really well for the Touch and I’m sure we’re all hoping it’ll be as great on the iPhone…
Thanks!
January 14, 2008 at 8:14 pm
It seems like no one wants to answer the Skype question, even tho many of us have asked. Maybe you could set up a forum so that someone else who knows could answer for us? I don’t know if it’s just high traffic or what, but it’d really be nice to have a clear answer.
January 14, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Nick: I don’t speak for the Touchmods team, but if you’re asking whether or not the current version of the SIP-VoIP software can be used with Skype the answer is easy: no.
It took one Google search (”Skype SIP”
to determine that Skype uses its own proprietary protocol and doesn’t work with SIP.
January 14, 2008 at 11:39 pm
Hi!
Will I be able to call persons (with VoIP or SIP oir whatever) by using my adressbook just by clicking on numbers?
January 14, 2008 at 11:58 pm
I was more interested in the mic itself without a mod, or does the mic require the mod to function at all?
January 15, 2008 at 12:50 am
You need to order a mic from the TouchMods guys if you do not want to modify one. The one you get from them works out of the box. The one at Wal-Mart *REQUIRES* modification to use with the SIP/VoIP program.
January 15, 2008 at 12:58 am
No, I meant the ipod mod. I don’t want to hack the ipod. Does the mic not function without hacking the ipod? And if so, is that something that is only a hardware issue that could be resolved with the release of the sdk?
January 15, 2008 at 12:59 am
*software, not hardware. Sorry.
January 15, 2008 at 1:03 am
@Nick - on Skype, that is not really a true SIP client, but rather a web-based workaround for iPhone. Skype for iPhone has to call you, then the other party, and conference the calls. You pay for both calls (in terms of Skype Credits). Since your iPhone does not have a phone number to call, you have to make it call another line.
This is much better. SIP/VoIP is a true SIP client. The current release lets you place a call, but not receive. It should be trivial to add the receive capability into a future release.
January 15, 2008 at 1:05 am
@Nick - yes, to use this you must jailbreak the iPod. Jailbreaking is so trivial, I would hardly call it a “hack”. Now modding the mic, that’s a little closer to being a hack
January 15, 2008 at 1:06 am
Nick: to use the mic most probably you want to use an app that records or transmits voice or music. Right? To do this you need to install such an app. And in order to install an extra app you need to “open” (not physically) your iPod for 3rd party apps. Pls read point 4 of this FAQ above.. (pls do not tell me i do not have patience to ansew questions

January 15, 2008 at 5:11 am
I read it, it was just a little confusing to me. Thanks for the updates. I just don’t want to jailbreak it because I’m still under warranty and would like to keep it that way. I mostly wanted to be able to call other people using skype (for free calls), so I want to hold out for the sdk phase. I imagine mics will continue to be produced if this is successful?
January 15, 2008 at 5:23 am
@Nick - if you need warranty service, just click restore in iTunes and there are no traces of your jailbreak! It is that easy…
January 15, 2008 at 6:27 am
I suppose. I don’t have to pay my phone bill right now, though, so I’m not in any big hurry. Thanks, tho.
January 15, 2008 at 6:20 pm
hi
what ports have to be open?
January 16, 2008 at 2:26 pm
HI touchmod’s guys! I have preordered a mic but i haven’t recived any mail asking for payment yet. why?
January 16, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Nick - Jailbreaking is easy and adds a tonn of functionality to your iTouch… including SIP VoIP.
January 16, 2008 at 5:23 pm
I am still trying to pay by paypal but your link was not working and today it is not even on the page. What should i do.
January 16, 2008 at 8:41 pm
i was wondering 3 things… 1> it would be quite cool to build a plug in at the bottom of itouch that includes simcard so you can use standard phone providers (like 02 and orange[this would also mean your product would probably outsell the iphone because it would be open to any simcard]) and that would be very nice.. also that would mean it could be used anywhere if you added in the right receptors whcih shouldnt be too hard for u guys…. 2> is it possible to use the mic to record like a normal mic aswell as for the phone or not… 3> if not possible for you to make an awesome very clever version with a sim card is it possible to get your mic version of the phone pay-as-you-go?
January 16, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Has anyone tried to make a Gizmo to Gizmo call? Guys will this only work on “phone” calls? I figured I would try the “free call” thing first… needless to say - it won’t work for me, so I’ll load up the account and try again making a call to a land line.
January 17, 2008 at 2:41 am
Bog: I’m in the USA and I tried Gizmo and it would dial out and connect but i could only hear strange background noise. Tried FreeCall and this worked good. just a little choppy on the speaker side.
January 17, 2008 at 2:42 pm
For free SIP accounts, following link has some information. I got my SIP Account from one of them.
Free SIP accounts Part Two

January 17, 2008 at 11:31 pm
I wonder if it would be possible to add functionality for sending free SMS messages. I know there are web apps for this but the recipient often gets charged for receiving the message. I don’t really know what’s possible at this point but I do know some of the voip companies allow you to send free text messages and I’d be really excited if this were possible.
January 18, 2008 at 3:33 am
Sipgate.de is also working
January 18, 2008 at 5:02 am
Hey Mate, I currently have an account set up with Skype….I dont see them on the list of providers, but will it work with Sype?
January 18, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Rboston - apparently not. As I understand it, it’s just because the software they’re making for it only works with SIP providers, of which Skype is not one. Since the iPod doesn’t have mic in enabled outside of that software, it won’t work with Skype, which is only a web app at this point. I think that, theoretically, if someone makes a Skype app with the sdk later, it should work with that, but I could be wrong.
January 18, 2008 at 9:06 pm
sipnet.ru is also woking good
January 19, 2008 at 5:04 am
Er, does this app supports the G.723 codec?

Can somebody answer a couple of questions about iPhone in France? In France, we have the advantage that the law requires mobile operators to unlock all phones on request after 6 months (or beforehand for a fee). That means I don’t really mind too much subscribing to the service (with Orange)… It’s not really a bad deal considering.
However, there is a technical problem involved, and I want to know if there is a sure way to get around it before I buy a phone. I need 3 languages: English, French, and Japanese. However, Orange/Apple tells me that the phone is marketed here with only English and French.
So, my question is: Is there a way to re-initialize the phone with standard Apple software that contains several languages (including Japanese)? More generally, how does updating work on these devices? I was told by Orange that updates come via their network, but I always imagined this could be done via the dock cradle when connected to the computer…?
Thanks for any advice!
January 19, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Following on to my last post… One reason I prefer the iPhone to the iPod Touch is that it has a camera. (Why didn’t Apple put a camera in the Touch?!!!) Also, I have complete faith that the techy guys here are going to succeed in getting the internal mic working soon, and that means I won’t forget the one I’d need to buy for the Touch. I do also want to use SIP, even if I get a phone!
By the way… I can’t find a link to download this software. It is currently available?

Hi,
Does anyone know if the mic will work on 1.1.3 and up?
January 20, 2008 at 1:27 am
Hi. I just got an email from touchmods saying that I can order their mic. I don’t really care about making phone calls though, I just want a mic so I can record lectures. I have a couple of questions:
1) Is this mic good for recording voice from a distance? I know it’s meant to be used to talk right into, as in a phone, but I’m gonna be 20 something feet away from my professor.
2) Is there software that works with the mic to record stuff?
Thanks.
January 20, 2008 at 10:54 am
If you don’t have the microphone yet, can you then just send *.wav files? - or some kind of audio files?
January 20, 2008 at 4:12 pm
I live in japan and I wanna use the service. What do u reccomend?? Which software? Is there any number I need to dial b4 callin??? Btw great job!!!! Love it!!! Almost no use of buying an iPhone!!!!
January 20, 2008 at 4:31 pm
@omar: the mic as device is ok for remote voice pickup, and VNotes is recently the only GUI-based SW that records sound. Unfortunatelly it uses low sampling rate with AMR compression that may be not the best choice for your case..
GUI = graphical user interface…
NOTE: we also have a simple recording app, without a GUI that is capable of recording with
higher sampling rates… We will work on some GUI, or give away the code for GUI developers..
January 20, 2008 at 9:31 pm
i found every thing the sip provider, the reg. timeout but when i put the number with the country code and push call it stays like that for a second and then it hangs up why did this happen ??

Hi,
I have been trying to get both versions of the application to work with no success. Using version 1.1 and freecall I cannot connect to server. I am in Canada, could this be the cause? I have uninstalled and re-installed with no luck. I have also checked my info and it is correct.
Thanks,

how do I recieve calls? I have a number thing is is supported by 1.1.1? Are there any different settings that need to be entered?

If you want to make Skype calls with SIP, check out Hipsip.com. They are in private beta, but you can register on their first-come first-served mailing list for an invitation.
January 22, 2008 at 4:28 am
Sorry to say it folks, but v1.1 stopped me from connecting to my SIP account, I have removed, re-installed, deleted, re-installed (3 times - macdaddy2002) and I cannot get a connection?
Everything was working fine in v1.0, ordered a mic, and now won’t work… ps I cannot find v1.0 on your site to downgrade until v1.1 is tested working.
Great work though guys - you have made great progress in a month! THANKS…
January 22, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Version 1.1 issues.
Here’s a thought - with v.1.0 - I could use the keyboard to enter the +1xxx (the + sign being the key symbol) with v1.1 the zero has the + sign on it, but no way of entering the symbol +…. ie. +1-519-xxxxx
Can this be the reason v1.1 is not working - I have not seen any other comments - has no-one had this issue? noting in the chats…
With 9000 downloads of v1.1, no comments yet? come on people…

January 23, 2008 at 4:25 pm
I tied for my account lowratevoip.com
I am able to dail and connect a landline phone.
But, there is no sound transmission on bouth sides.
what is the solution? Is the problem caused by my sip settings.
Thanks.
January 23, 2008 at 4:33 pm
The provider that i mentioned, is temporary out of sip calls.
That is why the possible problem is.
January 23, 2008 at 5:02 pm
@rog - How?
January 24, 2008 at 12:53 am
hey so I just upgraded to 1.1 from the old sip-voip that was working perfectly. Now when I type in the number and click call the call button switches to hangup and after like 10 seconds it goes back to call and the number disappears. No dial tone is heard either. What are the settings for freecall.com is the reg timeout supposed to be 1800 or 55 and is the STUN-domain and STUN-server supposed to be blank because I CANNOT edit them? Help please
January 24, 2008 at 1:02 am
i have the same problem as a lot of ppl
everything works when i call, the phone rings, but i cannot hear a thing
not even static sounds or muffled sounds
im using voipcheap
January 24, 2008 at 4:41 pm
@jman1234
STUN does not work right now, safely ignore the fields. The problem you are describing sounds like bad wifi connection or cannot login to SIP service provider. Please double check your creditentials, and try again. Make sure to turn it into small letter if your password’s first character is not suppose to be capital cased.
@Tom
Turn the volume up. Make sure you don’t have maximum volum lock at some low volume.
January 25, 2008 at 5:40 pm
hi i install voip on my iphone but the mic is not working? it will be work when i oder the mic? the problem is i herad the other person but they dont heard me.
January 26, 2008 at 12:28 am
I’ve tested with iPhone 1.1.2 and italian SIP provider squillo.it, it works perfectly, although you need an account with them (is not free). Now we ONLY NEED support for internal iphone mic (I call, and can hear people answering, but the cannot hear me!)
January 26, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I can call but I cannot hear voice or ringtone
Whats happening?
January 27, 2008 at 1:24 am
I wonder if I can use your sip client also on the iphone…and how to install it…
cheers,
michael.

does the current v1.1 work with the new 1.1.3 jalibroken ipod touch?
January 28, 2008 at 1:26 am
Kevin C,
V.1.1 does work with the new 1.1.3 jailbroken touch
January 29, 2008 at 3:33 pm
I tested on 1.1.3 also. It seem to connect ok however the voices that I hear comes out in a sort of reverb.
I am sure that that can easily be fixed in the next update. But all in all, it does work.

I just updated to jailbroken 1.1.3 (very stabil btw) but it seems that your beautiful program does not work…? It doesn’t save my account details. I had to modify accounts.xml. I could then connect to SIP-Server but could not make a call. I did not received my mic but could make a call hearing my opponend but could not talk. Good for a test. But now I was unable to do that. Any suggestions?

Will Apple’s BT or wired stereo headset with built-in mic work on the iPhone?
I’m on 1.1.3, and getting SIP to work reliably after a VNC client and vt100 emulation was my third highest reason for wanting 3rd party apps on the iPhone (I do tech support so remote access to computers and cheap phone service can be life savers).
Also is the limitation with lowercase passwords resolved? My SIP provider sets the passwords and they are mixed case.
Lastly, what’s the status of inbound calls?
Promise to donnate once the above things plus the internal mic in the iPhone work, but for now it’s only a proof-of-concept for my needs…
February 6, 2008 at 12:56 pm
Hi all,
got today my mic. It worx. Thanx.
But: under jailbroken 1.1.3 the sound seems very shattered.
And: must do the preferences every time.
Hope this will be fixed in the next versions. Meanwhile: any sugestions or workarounds?
February 6, 2008 at 4:46 pm
@axxlf
you have to modify the accounts.xml in the application folder directly. works great. (SSH into your iPod)
in which country do you live? I am unpatiently waiting for my mic
February 6, 2008 at 6:00 pm
2 suggestions that came to mind for later versions:
1) SIP user profiles, it’d be handy to have a couple of profiles available, e.g., work, home, etc for use at different locations with different providers.
2) RTP port configuration option to give some control over what UDP ports are used for the voice streams. It’s safer (a tiny bit at least) if I can restrict what UDP ports I need to open across my firewall to my asterisk server.
thanks guys, eagerly awaiting my Mic.

i am currently using sip-voip v1 as v1.1 has intermitant sound problem ( sounds like its turning on and off very quickly). the problem i have with both is the amount of time it takes to connect to sip- server ( voiparound ). when i initially connect to server it takes up to 4 -5 full minutes. any calls after that connect straight away. when i close app and start again i have the same problem again. PLEASE help to speed up ….

I’m using (testing, since I’m waiting for my mic) the SIP-VOIP in my IPhone and Itouch with Asterisk and works ok, I can make calls and listen the other party.
I’m trying to figure out how to send DTMF to the other side, like IVRs.
Is that feature supported in this application?
How is the method RFC2833 or inband?
Thanks, very good job

I see a lot of people have to modify accounts.xml. Would someone be able to give me the format for that file or a sample file as my accounts.xml appears to be completely blank? I am on Jailbroken 1.1.3.

I received the mic.
Very nice!
Works great with a tiny tiny reverb and no staccato effect (sipgate.de, prepaid). But the voice in the earphone is very silent. Any ideas to fix this?
February 9, 2008 at 12:50 am
My iTouch worked fine with first version of Sip-Voip.
Just installed the newer version. Doesn’t seem to work.
I changed Sp-server from sip-server to sip.voiparound.com
No difference.

I get a little bit of laggy service when I call people. It is hard to explain. Like when people talk, their voice breaks up a little bit. Is there any way I can adjust this? Or is this just how VoIP is?

February 10, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Guys, it’s quite unclear did you solve the iPhone’s AudioRoutring issue or did you just trick it with your mics ?
Means, do I need one of your mics to be able to run Siphon software on iPhone or does it use built-in mic on iPhones? If it does, can you please drop a hint how did you manage to achieve that ? The thing is I’m porting our mobile VoIP application Talkonaut from Symbian to iPhone and want to use built-in mic, but I fail to set up bi-directional audio (I receive blank frames on AudioQueue callback). Thanks.
Regards,
Ruslan.
February 11, 2008 at 6:05 am
I upgraded to 1.1.3 and had similar settings issue, maybe its because of the whole root/mobile accounts thing. On had to edit the accounts.xml file and I was on my way(ssh in as root).

February 12, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Sam… The issues you are describing with 1.1.3 appear to be related to the change in 1.1.3 where apps are run as mobile and not as root. However, some apps still try to write to the /var/root/Library folder and as mobile, permisson is not there. Try changing /var/root/Library permisson to 777 and give it another try.

Hey everyone, got my 1.1.3 itouch jailbroken, installed the sip-voip 1.1, put in the fantastic mic, got connected to the sip server (freeCall), made a call to test it on my mobile, its started to ring I answered but could not hear anything…I thought at first that it was the mic but it worked really well when I used it with voice note app. Anyone got any ideas? so close but so far…
February 13, 2008 at 12:09 am
ok, got it to work!! figured out what seemed to be the problem. I was trying to call while using VPN in order to connect to the wireless. When I tried it at home, the connection, sound and reception was perfect! no reverb nothing! Perfect work!!! keep it up!!

I’m loving the mic so far, but I’m wondering about the relay delay in the call.
ie: there’s a second or two gap in the call between caller and callee…
Is this a software issue or provider?
I’m using freecall with credits on 1.1.3

hey guys,
first thank you very much for your work! it is really nice someone is trying to improve the ipod’s possibilities…
i wanted to order a mic, but was too late for the first round.. impatient to try it out i decided to build one on my own. now i have a little problem:
when i try out the mic (built with the conrad parts) with sip or the instrument tuner it does not work properly: the mic level is way too low! hitting directly with my finger on the mic is hearable, but my normal voice isn’t. i was wondering if it has to do something with the cap, i use an 200nv one.
thanks a lot!

Question: do I need the external mic with an iPhone?
Thanks in advance

@Peter: it should be around one microFarrad, not nanoVolt
yes, the level is normally low, but if you raise the volume on your touch (double-click home button, then raise volume), then is MUST be audible what you record/play/phone.
@khurram: no, if you have a jailbroken 1.1.3
@Joe:no!
@aross1: when testing with freecall we did not feel such a long delay, of course it may be country dependant.. we will test it with other accounts and see soon.
@theBog: thanks for your feedback! wea re happy to hear you are satistied!
@cameron: yes it is also an issue witrh 1.1.2 or other OS if you are either on slow internet connection, or the calles party is far away… we will try to use another codec and see what happens..
