Gamepad ideas
Hello!
Reluttr just sent us his design of a new game controller:

Acc. to the image the controller hosts the iPod Touch in a landscape mode.
Further, he writes:
“In theory it should work, because there are ipod remotes that do fully
work on the touch, and a game pad is technically a remote, just in a
more comfortable game friendly layout. I believe this would be a hit,
especially if zodttd integrated it to work with his emulators. Developing
something like this would be groundbreaking and would promote more
gaming on the touch/phone. For instance Doom, quake, and other games could
be modded to work with it thus making a more gamer friendly
environment.
I know there is other things people may be wanting like a external
camera to be put on the dock, or even a w-sim adaptor. But I believe the
gamepad is the most needed/wanted and possibly the easiest to achieve. I
think this would also help further expand you knowledge of the dock
and its potential.
Anyways I figured if anyone could make something like this real it
would be you guys, since you most likely know more about the limits of the
iphone/touchs dock than anyone else.
First of all, big thanks, Reluttr for sharing the idea with us. We just created a separate session for this topic on our Wiki here. Everybody, plese share your opinion/ideas with others to speed up the development of such an add-on. In case you have a little time and some useful info related to the topic share the info below on the Comments session or on the Wiki. As said: the Wiki is out there for you! .. and gaming is fun
Happy Hacking!

Thats a GREAT idea for future games and such….the only problem is not with the controller but with the games…they might have to be redesigned…but thats not your problem…so the controller is a perfect idea and I would buy it.

Nice idea, perhaps bleutooth/wifi should be considered too? Love the dual analog sticks - definite must.

wow, i never though of that someone is thinking about that idea. It will be really awesome if you guys can do it.

Wow. . .it’s a PSP. . .how pointless
April 15, 2008 at 5:49 am
So are you actually going to do this, or is it just an idea your putting out for someobe else?
April 15, 2008 at 6:46 am
1. top left right buttons like PS2 gamepad for the use for other emules other than nes.
2. the case should open sideways than close to case the ipod/phone. there is a speaker accessory that does that
April 15, 2008 at 8:23 am
hiho,
nice idea… maybe also a mic ,a alternative earphone or/and a speaker could be integrated. The touch ones maybe will be blocked by the gamepads connector.
One Problem with this early design is the missing dockconnector and the instable mountingpoints on both sites.
The OpenLink Libery from DevDot sounds very promissing.
The biggest problem could be to produce the pad in a higher number of units. There are many plasticparts needed.

@Touchmods:
Really important:
Look at this: http://fring.com
It’s a really cool App! Check it out
Also SIP

@dasda: take it easy. the number of buttons is not limited.
@Daniel: it is possible, but not without some investors. and a more aggressive business model.
@gamepad: which speaker accessory does it, pls? we need one
@Albert: you tested it? how stable is it? how well does it work on the Touch/iPhone? Do these guys support the Touchmods Mic? Never mind, at least we know somebody found our “Sourcecode” page useful.

I have been working on a PIC based SNES controller -> iPhone adapter. I personally think that that is the way to go, since it can be easily built by anybody with a soldering iron and a few readily available parts. This gamepad would require fabing custom plastic components and pcbs, as well as different versions for the touch and iPhone. It certainly can’t hurt to have different ideas in the works, as long as there is enough standardization that all apps that use the game pads can work with any gamepad device.

@touchmods: no Probs for Fring working on
the Iphone (SIP). I’m glad about it.
Keep up the good working!
April 15, 2008 at 8:47 pm
This would be nice, but would be too big for my liking =/
Imagine the iPod touch being twice its normal length..bleh..
April 15, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Frung is totally useless for ipod touch…and theres only the touchmods sip-VoIP app and its the best and its what other 45 k people can say….even if frung does wirk on the iphone, you still cant customized or be as unvolved and creative with the touchsmods app…leo

Forget this and get a program that works on iphone perfect came out today here it is this is great http://www.fring.com/
Voip that really works without a complicated mic etc

I rather want speak and mic combination base on this desgin than gamepad
April 16, 2008 at 6:27 am
speaking of add on modules for the touch, i’m working on a little PCB with a few components and vibrator motor (taken form xbox controller, which still works but has no vibration) in a small case. I’m new to making schematics but I made a little scetch of what the connections would look like and now i’m working on a scetch of the PCB itself.
if anyone has any comments or suggestions please post back
p.s. i checked out that fring service. pretty cool if you have an iphone. however, i prefer a touch for several reasons. the biggest reason is this. touch is $500 for 32GB while iphone is $500 for 16GB (and thats the highest is goes for the iphone). this is really important for me because i store a lot of videos in my library. also the touch is thinner. lastly, you have to pay a monthly bill to use it.
April 16, 2008 at 6:32 am
sorry
in my previous post i didn’t really explain what the pcb and components will do.
basically the little panel (with the circuitry in it) has a toggle button on it. when its toggled to turn the vibration on, then when a signal comes in from the stereo jack, its voltage (once regulated) will drive a vibrator motor using a transistor and a 9V battery

Hi, this sounds like a great idea it will get rid of the pain in the ass bios. But my friend and I think that you should add a wireless connector to the controller that allows iphones/ipod touches to connect to outher iphone/ipod touches so they can play certain vs modes and other things in certain GBA roms. Like wireless adaptors. An example of the games that are like this are pokemon. They can connect to each other on the real GBA. It would be amazing if you could do this with this controller. We would gladly pay any amount for this if it had this capability.
Thanks for taking your time and reading this.

@ Mika,
I think I like the flickr design better. It has more of an old school feel to it. I also like the white one too though. I might buy it if someone comes up with a way to play Grand Theft Auto lol.
April 21, 2008 at 11:29 am
that would be great , i’d donate every week just to see it made
April 22, 2008 at 3:35 am
after looking at the design i have a couple of suggestions.
The corners of the gamepad should be as rounded as the ipod’s because it would look way better and would be a perfect place to put the shoulder buttons.
For the analog sticks, it can use the slim custom made psp analog sticks which would give more space inside the device which go for like $24.83 a pop and 198.62 for ten .. here is the site , http://www.coolmods.co.uk/catalog/ and its called PSP RAZOR X
and since there probably will speakers… wouldn’t that drain the itouch/iphone’s battery quick ? so there will\should probaly have to be an internal battery for the gamepad. and a port on the right side to charge both the ipod and the gamepad.
a rumble feature would be nice but i highly doubt it will happen
But if possible, there should be a spot to plug a mic in for online gaming, that right there would bring in many gamers
if a gamepad with those features were to be made , it would probably cost around 100 dollars or more to make, so people would have to be giving alot of money on a weekly basis, and i’m ok with that, because I’ve already started saving money for this project
@ Touchmods
I would love to see this made, think of all the possibilities. People would be able to play their favorite games, programmers would be able to make new and innovating games , and best of all, alot of people will buy the gamepad just to play their games.
If you are considering making it, i’d like to help out by helping in the development process, i can be a tester , and i can design 3d models of it on the computer.
well anyway, if you liked my suggestions, please contact me.

The itouch one is gonna be better right? Ii have an itouch and i wan to be able to laugh at my iphone friends and truthfully say “Mine is better than yours.”

@Jean-Mark: thanks a lot for offering your help! First we need to get the SIP(hon) or SIP-VoIP to a level when users do not complain too much (although the source is out there), then we will focus on some more HW. One of them is probably going to be this Controller.
Analogue Joystick would be also nice (as in case of PSP, but would rise the cost of it maybe too much). Once we have the 3D models, we will need AGAIN some company to produce the housing. This is a lot of extra organizational task, but YES we plan to go for it!
