A Little (More) Magic

Here we go after an email-free day. It was nice! And as you may see, we have a little trick for you. Not really a trick, because it really works: an iPod Touch, a Motorola S9 headset and a BT dongle originally not really meant for mobile VoIP. But … ;)

Below is a video showing a recording process with using the Microphone of the Motorola S9 A2DP headset (unfortunately we forgot to record how loud the playback over the headset is - it is REALLY loud),

video link for Touch/iPhone

… and here comes the AMR file recorded with the latest VNotes. No video tricks, only pairing tricks, as this BT device was definitely NOT meant for using with the Touch.

Good Night!

eok, Marian, Samuel

    THanks

  9. Sip voip tester Says:

yeah can you please clarify whether its a modded dongel or a normal one? I’m still donating by the way I still didn’t get my paycheck yet.

    Regards

  10. marian Says:

the dongle and the DIY tutorial: this BT comes from Nokia. The pairing trick is easy, and if we publish the do-it-yourself, they will suddenly sell thousands of those dongles.., just look at the download counter: one download per minute since Jan. 1!! Not that we do not want you to know how to do it, but I personally am tired of doing things for nothing, while the big companies get more and more rich. FYI: we did receive like 6-7 mails offering an iPhone and/ or headsets to mod. They asked for our postal address and since then no response.. Why?!? If you wanna donate a f”ยง%$”" iPhone, pls buy us some Amazon coupons (gift cards), and send the Coupon code over en email. No more postal addresses, no more jokes. Thnx. marian

  11. Bob Bacon Says:

Marian, if you’re “tired of doing things for nothing” then make it a commercial enterprise and see how much you can sell it for. It’ll be a great loss in the short term but there will be someone to fill in behind you before too long.

IMO (and with no offence intended), you’ve got a bit over your heads with having to juggle both the hardware and software, the PayPal thing hasn’t helped and it now feels like you’re doing it all for nothing. In your shoes I would cut a commission deal with your hardware supplier (took all of 5 seconds to work out who that is) and concentrate on the software. You’ll be better off in the end.

  12. Mikael Wahlgren Says:

How is the functionality of this combo? Will the bluetooth transmission/reception be open all time while the dongle is connected to the iPod, or will it establish connection only when calling?

I guess the dongle doesn’t know much about the status of the touch, so it can’t open the connection to the bluetooth headset only when necessary, but will keep it open all time (and thus fry your brain and empty the batteries? :-) ).

I think we would need some software control of the bt dongle, to make the solution working good?

  13. C3 Says:

    are these instructions posted anywhere?

  14. marian Says:

@Bob: thanks! We need to discuss it with the Guys internally.
@Mikael: yes: the BT is always on when you plug it in…

    thanx Marian.

  16. D3fPo3t Says:

ok i’ll try and scrounge it up
@mairian i understand your frustration with the big companies making money and all but just so you know over here at least i’d have to say at least 80% of the downloads in the USA are from ages 14 to 23 and of those the vast majority of the( therefor they have to buy it from other people) OHH and btw dont worry about people going out to by these by the heap load theres one problem THERE NO CASE as of yet

  17. vin Says:

@Marian; A good way to make money is to buy stock of the company who produces the device that you are hacking. Then when people flock to buy (hopefully, it helps if you seed the web-bloggers before hand) that device you are making money. Just a thought. Also clone manufacturers pay big bucks for hacks!! (another way to screw the big companies)

  18. Eric Ohman Says:

    Hi!
Nice guys! I’ve been e-mailing you yesterday but no response. Tried today too. Both the 500 sign-up thing for the mic AND the donate paypal-addresses is not possible to recieve money. Please help. And check your mailboxes. Both the order and yahoo mail ;)

  19. touchmods Says:

@vin: yes, not a bad idea… let me look for three more BT dongles ;)
@Eric: we are not answering mails these days. seriously. sorry. pls just wait until we solve this thig with paypal or we start to give away mics for free. everything is possible in this world ;)

  20. Bob Bacon Says:

Just a thought, has anyone looked at the Jabra A125S ? http://www.jabra.com/Sites/Jabra/UK-UK/products/Pages/JabraA125s.aspx?producttab=Specifications

Is it suitable ? I see a few on eBay, although I’m not sure how the audio-in (mic) would work.

  21. Dhawal Says:

hey plz can you tell me how can i make my motorola s9 to the ipod touch

  22. uphi Says:

I am going to side with the team on this one. Look, over 25000 downloads. At just $1 a d/l the team would have enough money to continue. Come on people, DONATE. The team cant be expected to do all this for nuthing.
Yes, I came up with the iVoice III mod. In retrospect, I should have coordinated my efforts with the team so more mics would be sold. But I didn’t, and now we have the team being asked to do this and that to their software, and they are not being compensated AT ALL. Thats NOT FAIR. Come on people, we WANT and NEED software like this. Lets get behind the team and show them some support ! At this time even a SMALL donation from MANY people would do the trick.
Thank you TEAM for your hard work, and please continue…..
    Earl
ps. Team, you may post this wherever you think it might do good.

  23. marian Says:

    thnx a lot, Uphi!!

  24. justit Says:

WORDPRESS, is the wrong medium to handle these kinds of transactions and keep track. No wonder the team seems to be spending more time tracking/backtracking orders which leads to less time innovating/sleeping (or vice versa).
I can get you guys a hosted account on our server with a shopping cart if it helps. Then everyone would need to register and could pay for special restricted access content pages (ie. how-to goodies)
That’s how you make money with information.

  25. touchmods Says:

@justit: thnx a lot! honestly, how much extra time will it need to shift everything to your server, and what are you asking in return? just a question, pls do not misunderstand…thnx.

  26. D3fPo3t Says:

if i have to pay for the DIY or things than im S O L i have 6 bucks in the bank now and dont get paid till the third of feburay
what i think u guys need are some ads for us to click on that way u guys earn money for every click and we get to look at some cool things to buy

  27. uphi Says:

The BT trick I am interested in for more than the mic input. What if there were a BT manager and many profiles we could sync, file xfer, and many more things. That would be great, but what BT dongle to use ? Mabe if someone developed this, they should contact the mfg of said dongle and get some development sponsership. I do applaud the team for looking into the BT.
    Thanks
    Earl

  28. Chip Says:

I’m waiting for the Bluetooth dongle that allows DUN to the Touch. I hope that would come with the SDK. ;)

  29. marian Says:

@chip: me to. I am willing to pay Eu 100 for the first one supporting A2DP, DUN, Mic feedback. just let me know where to send the money. maybe one day it will be our Donate buitton? ;)

  30. Cane Says:

    Hi,

I have got all the parts that are necessary for building the bluetooth adapter. But I’m a little bit confused. On the picture you showed us you only used 4 wires? So there is nor stereo but only mono sound supported/possible at the moment?

  31. Cane Says:

    sry, but I forgot something.

Do you use pin 18 on the Dock Connector for power and connect it with pin 4 on the nokia device?

  32. FHERRERA Says:

Dude you guys are awsome, as soon as you guys get the paypal thing working I will for sure send you guys some money. I do believe that BT is the way to go here, good looking out.

  33. touchmods Says:

@cane: unfortunately it is only a mono Dongle, but this is just the beginning, and proof of concept of the pairing trick…

@Cane: acc to the ipodlinux site it is the 13 pin, maybe on your site it is 31-13 = 18, so : yess. (there is only one UCC pin on the iPod dock and also only one at that Nokia thing)

    ok: here some fast HOW-TO:
    - BT: pls search amazon.de, amazon com, etc. (the company where the gift cards come from ;)
    - Nokia pinout: http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-Nokia/nokia_pop_pinout.shtml
    - iPod pinout: http://ipodlinux.org/Dock_Connector
    - Pairing: first you read the Nokia manual, plug the BT into a NokiaPhone, type the passkey on the Nokia phone for pairing, pair it, test it on the phone, unplug, open the BT, connect wires to the iPod dock conn… and enjoy :)
The Dongle writes the pairing info into its Flash memory, and remembers it!!! So, pair all the headsets you plan to use it with before removing the Nokia connector from the PCB ;)

somebody, pls make a video or a short tutorial if you have some extra time. when putting it onto youtube do not forget to add the keyword: “touchmods” so that we can easily search it online. thnx!!! regards.

  34. Cane Says:

    Ok, thanks!

But now I have 2 Problems:
    1. I destroyed my dock connector (got soldering iron between 2 pins :( )
    2. Have no old Nokia Phone (yet! :) )

Is there an adress, there I can get some dock connectors?

I will make a few photos, when I start the next time with an old Nokia phone and new connector, but than can take a few days…

  35. touchmods Says:

@Cane: it really seems you are not checking the links we put here for you. (there is a chapter on the Dock Connector link saying this: “Where to order Dock Connectors” ;)
    anyway…

  36. Mikael Wahlgren Says:

I will make it easy for you… just press my name… lol

  37. Cane Says:

thx, but I ordered a few iPod USB cables on eBay.

  38. justit Says:

@TOUCHMODS sorry I thought this thread was dead so I never checked till now…

So for hosting, pricing is determined mostly on download bandwidth (what’s yours?), space is not an issue. Are you looking at moving your existing cart with paypal or do you want a new cart with paypal and other payment forms.

We run linux servers with a LAMP mix so window$ is not an option.
So moving to something new , easy, migrating same cart, will need to know what you use. We’d have to discuss what specific features you want included, I recommended paid membership content subscriptions, you may need something else. Email me.

  39. delirium Says:

    Hi

Because I have no understanding in how you managed to access this bluetooth dongle with the OS on the touch it might be that my idea won’t work at all but here it is.

I just found this _little_ http://gizmodo.com/347091/tiny-bluetooth-adapter-from-brando-gives-you-connectability gadget which would be easily modable into a dock connector and from the pinout of the nokia BT dongle this seems to be some kind of USB device, Would this work out in any way or is the technical difference between those two devices to big to get it running ?

I have this sony BT transmitter.

And also the S9 headphones. I have been dying for BT voip. I’ll send you my transmitter and 100 bucks for the hook up if its possible at this point. -Nick

  41. touchmods Says:

@Fherrera: The “Donate” button is back ;)
@Cane: eb*y does not exist for me (mrn), why did you do it if we have Ridax (DockConn supplier) with us?
@Justit: thanks a lot!! honestly it seems that we have a free server up to now hostin all thos e GB SIP downloads and everything.. regarding the online shop: we will come back if we decide for it. but thnx!!
@delirium: we are using the Audio In and Out pins of the Touch to connect the Analog wires (not Data!!!) of that Nokia Dongle. Howerver, unfortunately, the one you found is to be connected directly to USB pins, which…, yess, requires some OS hacking if it is possible at all.
@Philly: finally somebody who seems to be really interested in the topic! :)
unfortunately we are not sure if that sony BT supports two-way audio, ie. if it also receives the mic signal from the S9, as the Nokia one does (again, the nokia one is only mono :( ). So pls do not send anything to us, until we are sure, of course, if you bought this BT to be opened and evaluated, ok. Otherwise it is just a waste of time and money.

  42. delirium Says:

@touchmods: Thanks for the clarifications !

    Hi All.

    Firstly Touchmods………….. You Rock!!!

    OK question.

I have recently got a Blueye thing, that allows me to answer calls through my headphones (Attached to my iPod touch) and it has an inbuilt mic which transmits to the mobile.

Is there a way of butchering this bad boy to enable bluetooth connectivity direct with SIP VOIP or to make it a hard wired Mic/Earphones for the Touch.

Think in the US it is made by Mavizen or something.

  45. touchmods Says:

@Bishopamsterdam: what is the device you connect to the Touch (link?) and which one is the headset (link?). You are saying: “allows me to answer calls through my headphones” … how?
OK, this Nokia device seems to be headset independent, so you can pair it with different brands. For the case you need an urgent solution… this is one of them. But if you have time… keep checking our site ;)

  46. Newtotouchmods Says:

  47. taffman Says:

the device bishopsmsterdam mentions is called BlueEye and is sold in the I’m under the Gear4 brand name. It retails for about 50 gbp inplaces such as of pc world. It is a blue tooth device which connects in line between the ipod and the ear bud headphones that come with it. The device acts as a remote control for the ipod (i think) but more importantly contains a mic. The device pairs with your mobile phone via BT. When an incoming phone call comes into the mobile phone, the device cuts music tv the phones and allows the call to be taken using the phones and the mike. When the call ends the music resumes. Outgoing calls are also possible and are made using the ipod screen to select numbers to be dialled. The device also stores recent calls etc and they are accessible via the iPod. I have been toying with the idea of buying the device in the hope that it could a) possibly be used to access the Internet via the mobile phone thus allowing true mobile browsing and b) using the mic and phones for voip calls in wireless locations.

I’d be very interested to know whether you feel such developments would have any mileage. If you want to make money a device giving the touch the functionality I describe would surely be a sure fire winner (and possibly put a big dent in iPhone sales). Keep up tv good work.

  48. Taffman Says:

    Hi again.

In my previous entry, I forgot to add the weblink to the relevant pages in the Gear4 website, so here it is http://www.gear4.com/product_detail.php?products_id=235.

Also on the site, found a special iPod BT dongle. See this page:
    http://www.gear4.com/product_detail.php?products_id=415

    Hope this all helps!

  49. Brad Says:

This has been done since the Video iPod was introduced. Jabra makes an iPod A2DP and AVCRP supported bluetooth music adapter for iPods. It supports all docking iPods and it also has its own power source. Jabra also has a nice pair of Bluetooth stereo headphones that are cheap and are awesome. Beats my high cost Nokias anyday.

  50. Brad Says:

I forgot to mention the nice iMuffs. Those are awesome too as its both the stereo headphones and ipod music adapter.

  51. touchmods Says:

@Thnx for your posts Taffman! We will study the links.. really :) !
@Brad: Which Jabra BT dongle does support 2-way communication, ie. A2DP, but ALSO Mic feedback from the Headset TO the iPod at the SAME TIME? We are ready to pay for 3 of such devices right now! (if they exist :) )

  52. AoW777 Says:

would this work w/ say… the Icombi or the Hitachi bt dongles for the ipod touch?

  53. marian Says:

@AoW777: if they support the mic of the headset, then yes. Easy to check: open the dongle and see if there is sthng connected to pins 25 and 26 (Line-In pins of iPodds).

  54. Bishopamsterdam Says:

    What Taffman said.

It pairs and controls the actual mobile phone through bluetooth, but gets its power from the Ipod (and remote controls)

Its a sleek little unit, that could act as a perfect line in mic/remote/earphone set, and still do the mobile stuff.

I am more than prepared to send it off to you for closer inspection and modding, in the name of science and the big 2 fingers at iPhones :-)

I am presuming that you can see my email address as its your board, but if not re-post and we can sort something out.
